Lions Square

Lions Square is one of the most vibrant and historic squares in Heraklion, Crete, located at the heart of the city’s old town. The square is named after the impressive Venetian fountain at its center, which features a pair of majestic stone lions. The fountain, known as the “Lion Fountain” (Fountain of the Lions), was built in 1628 by the Venetians and remains one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. The fountain, with its four lion-head spouts, once supplied water to the local population and has become a symbol of Venetian rule over Crete. Lions Square is surrounded by historic buildings, including the famous Morosini Fountain, the Venetian Loggia, and several traditional Cretan cafes and shops. The square serves as a lively meeting point for locals and tourists alike, often hosting cultural events, festivals, and outdoor performances. With its combination of Venetian and Cretan architectural styles, Lions Square offers a charming blend of history, culture, and social life, making it a must-visit location for anyone exploring Heraklion.
